From 9-15 February 2026, the University of Tartu will host a themed week to celebrate the "Women in Science" day. During this week, we aim to highlight the work and achievements of our researchers and have invited them to answer three questions. This time, Marilin Moor, Junior Research Fellow in Data Science, shares her thoughts.

Please describe briefly your field of research.

The field of research is constantly changing due to rapid developments in science. I am currently focusing on automating image analysis to make the work of laboratory-based researchers faster and more efficient.I have worked with microscope images and, in collaboration with the Institute of Pharmacy, created a web solution that allows the diameter of fibers to be measured much faster.

Currently I am developing agent-based image software solution for biologists in collaboration with German scientists.

What do you especially like about being a scientist?

Research work offers unlimited freedom to fill your head with interesting ideas and then bring them to life within the limits of possibility. In my work, I particularly value the synthesis and further development of existing ideas. Conferences and seminars, where the sharpest minds in the field meet, bring freshness to my daily computer work. It is a good place to exchange ideas and, as a result, new opportunities for cooperation are born.

I also really enjoy reading scientific articles. I am fascinated by how authors present their research: what kind of diagrams, statistical tests, and metrics they use. The more I read, the more comprehensive my picture of the field becomes.

Who have you looked up to, and why?

One of my role models is my former athletics coach Tiina Torop. Her zest for life and passion for sports and her work are very inspiring. She was always supportive, and even after my athletic career ended, her words still carry me forward.

In the world of science, one of my role models is Leopold Parts, whose innovative ideas and attention to detail have left a strong mark on the academic environment. During my bachelor's studies at the university, Hedi Peterson became my role model. She first showed me that it is possible to successfully teach a very good course alongside other responsibilities, and later proved that clear expression of ideas is key.

From 9 to 15 February, the University of Tartu will hold a theme week "Women in Science". During this week, we would like to highlight the work and achievements of our women scientists. The Day of Women in Science has been celebrated in Estonia at the initiative of the University of Tartu and the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences (EYAS) since 2021. The day aims to underline the role of women and girls in science, break stereotypes and encourage women to pursue a career in science.
