Please describe briefly your research area

I am working on applications of Information Theory, which underlies many areas such as multimedia compression, coding for communication and storage systems, network coding, and many others. Nowadays, due to dramatic progress in microelectronic technologies, brilliant predictions made by Claude Shannon in the area of Information Theory more than 70 years ago have become a part of our daily lives: the Internet, video broadcasting, telemedicine, etc.

What achievement in your career are you proud of?

I published the book “Compression for Multimedia” at Cambridge Univ. Press and was awarded by the Lise Meitner Visiting Professor Chair in Engineering at Lund University Sweden, twice, in 2005 and 2011.

What do you especially like about being a scientist?

I can satisfy my irresistible thirst for knowledge, and I enjoy the opportunity to work and communicate with talented people.

From 5 to 11 February, the University of Tartu will hold a theme week "Women in Science". During this week, we would like to highlight the work and achievements of our women scientists. The Day of Women in Science has been celebrated in Estonia at the initiative of the University of Tartu and the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences (EYAS) since 2021. The day aims to underline the role of women and girls in science, break stereotypes and encourage women to pursue a career in science.
