The AIProHealth Summer School offers an intensive learning experience for students, postdocs, junior specialists, and startup employees in AI, medicine, and business who focus on innovation in medical technology. At the event you will learn about AI's technical, ethical, and legal aspects in healthcare and gain entrepreneurial experience in bringing AI solutions to the healthcare market.
In the on-site programme in Tartu on 11–15 August, you will receive lectures from experts, have guided discussions, and put everything into practice in a hackathon.
Large language models have remarkable reasoning capabilities—but to use them effectively, they must be guided to the right data. In this lecture and hands-on workshop, Mikhail Papkov, Research Scientist at Google, will explore cutting-edge open-source frameworks for building intelligent agents and demonstrate how to connect them with external data sources. Join us to learn how to turn LLMs into practical, data-driven tools.
The title of his presentation is: "Reasoning through health data with agents".
Genia Albre leads a team of product managers at Microsoft, building AI-powered experiences used by millions in mission-critical roles. Her team focuses on cutting-edge areas such as Conversational AI, Contextual AI, natural language to data visualization, prompt experimentation, model finetuning, and performance optimization. With 15 years in the tech industry, Genia brings a unique blend of startup grit, enterprise-scale impact, and academic insight. She holds degrees from the University of Tartu and Carnegie Mellon University.
She will give two lectures.

As AI evolves, so do the products we create. This session explores how emerging AI patterns—like autonomous workflows and intelligent assistants—are reshaping user expectations and product strategy. We'll discuss what PMs need to consider when managing these new experiences, from reliability to user trust to long-term value.
In this interactive talk, radiologist Dr. Martin Reim offers a concise clinical perspective on the use of AI in radiology and medicine more broadly—highlighting opportunities for current and future collaboration. Drawing on personal experience, he will discuss how to bridge clinical expertise and AI research to build a medtech company, and raise discussion points relevant to the medical field.
The title of his presentation is: Radiologist view – Artificial Intelligence in clinical use and how to get there?
Margit Sutrop is a Professor of Practical Philosophy and Head of the Centre for Ethics. She is also a Member of the Estonian Parliament, an ethics expert at the European Commission, and the Head of the Ethics Advisory Board of the Estonian Centre for Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. Her lecture will give an overview of the ethical issues of AI and how AI can align with human values.

Tõnu Runnel has founded multiple internet & design companies since the end of the 1990s when he was still at high school. He has exited them all and is now a writer and photographer, occasionally speaking about urbanism, design, tech or photography. At our summer school he's taking up his oldest topic in a renewed form — why and how do design and branding matter for upstart companies.
Jaarika Järviste has worked as head of innovation, development and eHealth portfolio in the last 5 years in the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. She has called to life the innovation grant and consulted digital health companies on what evidence they need to gather before applying for reimbursement. Being a doctor by education and managing a team of product managers she also has a wide view of needs that need to be taken into account before deciding if the product creates as much value to the market as the company says.
Silja Elunurm is an attorney-at-law, currently Regulatory Head of Migrevention, the world’s first fully digital headache clinic, and brings extensive expertise in launching software as a medical device. As a lecturer at both the University of Technology in Tallinn and the University of Turku, she offers a comprehensive view of the EU regulatory frameworks shaping the HealthTech sector and provides practical insights into navigating this complex landscape.
The title of her presentation is "Navigating the Evolving Landscape of HealthTech Regulations in EU (MDR, AI Act, GDPR, EHDS)"
Sulev Reisberg is an expert in health informatics and personalized medicine. He has worked as a software developer for Estonian health registries and the Estonian Biobank, later transitioning to roles as a data analyst and researcher. His scientific article "Translating genotype data into clinical pharmacogenetic recommendations: challenges and solutions" received the ICPerMed "Best Practice in Personalised Medicine" Recognition in 2019. Currently, he focuses on large-scale analyses of linked Estonian health databases. He also leads OHDSI Estonia and serves on the board of the Estonian Society of Personalized Medicine. In his lecture and hands-on workshop, he will explain what health data is, how it is collected, and how to clean it for better use.
During the online hackathon on 16–28 August, you will team up with other students to develop a prototype for a business case, for example, implementing an AI solution to a healthcare problem.
Before the Summer School on-site programme, you must pass two self-paced online courses, which will be sent to you after the registration. For the hackathon, you are welcome to indicate if you want to team up with other specific participants.
The deadline is 25 May. The Summer School fee is 350 euros for students based in the European Union. 250 euros for students based in RIS countries.
Transportation and accommodation costs are not included. If you are coming from outside of Tartu, you can apply for a travel grant that will help cover the costs of travelling and accommodation if you are qualified. The exact amount of the grant is decided after the face-to-face week. The course fee also does not cover participants' breakfast and dinners during the summer school.
