AS Medisoft, in collaboration with the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science and the AI and Robotics Centre AIRE, is testing the use of large language models to automate the documentation of conversations during general physician (GP) visits.

The aim of this collaboration is to save time spent on writing medical summaries. The role of artificial intelligence is to document patient visits and generate an automatic summary of the conversation that took place with the doctor.

During the demo project, ten GPs will record ten visits each, and text summaries will be generated based on these recordings. These summaries will then be compared to the medical summaries manually entered by doctors. All recorded data will be anonymised, meaning that no personal patient information will be used. “We are validating the feasibility of this business idea before making a larger investment. We want to assess how reliable the AI-generated visit summaries are—whether they add anything unnecessary or leave out important details,” explained Tambet Matiisen, project manager at the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science.

The planned project is unique in Estonia. While similar solutions exist elsewhere in the world, they have not yet been tested in the Estonian language.

AI technology is advancing rapidly, and its use in medicine is expanding, providing increasing support for doctors in their daily work. If the demo project is successful, AS Medisoft will be able to refine the tested solution and implement it in practice.

AS Medisoft is an Estonian IT company founded in 1992, specialising in the development of medical and social security software and providing user support. The company offers its own software solutions to hospitals, GPs, and other healthcare institutions.
